Trail route data was recorded with the GPS in "track" mode while hiking with the GPS lying on top of the backpack. Therefore, segments of the collected track data can be inaccruate due to weak or lost GPS signal. The trailhead, trail junction, creeks, roads, camping location (fire rings), toilets, potable water, telephone, etc. waypoints were collected while stopped, with the GPS handheld held in front of me and centered over or very near the object. I believe the waypoint data is more accurate than the trail route data. NOTE: There is no guarantee that that the GPS data presented here is accurate. The water information (stream, dry vs. wet crossing, etc) is seasonal and weather dependent and can be greatly different for your trip. Do not rely on this data for your wilderness navigation or for your water resupply planning. After the trip, the several data "clean-up" actions are performed. I use the ExpertGPS software from TopoGrafix (www.expertgps.com) to display and modify the tracks, routes, and waypoints. Disconnected tracks are reconnected, waypoints obviously in error are removed, and descriptions are expanded. This created the detailed track data set. The tracks are then simplified and converted to routes. The route data are edited so that routes pass through known trailhead, river/stream, and trail junction waypoints. This creates the simplified route data set. Two sets of GPS data are available for download. One contains the almost raw detailed track data set. The second set contains the simplified route data set. Each GPS data set contains three tracks or routes, one for each of the Little Missouri River, Viles Branch, and Athens-Big Fork trails.
